UNHEALTHY POLITICS

07/03/13

It’s disappointing, though hardly surprising, that there will now be a delay in implementing provisions of the Affordable Care Act. President Obama’s health care reform initiative is so sweeping that revisions and refinements are inevitable. The most unfortunate aspect of the delay is that it’ll be an additional year, at least, before tens of thousands of Americans finally have health insurance. But businesses, especially small businesses, were simply not prepared to implement the new law. And thus the delay seems prudent. And again, we believe other changes are inevitable.

But spare us the political noise. Immediate responses included gleeful Republicans who wrongly suggest the delay is evidence of a fatally flawed plan. It’s not. Meanwhile some Democrats rejoiced that the delay protects them from election year problems implementation problems might cause. For most of us this is a critical discussion about the health of every citizen in this country and how we can work together to guarantee access to care. For others it’s about keeping or getting power. Which sounds healthier to you?
