Last week, a handful of us from the WISC editorial board and news team toured the Waisman Center on the UW campus. The Waisman Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, as one of the pre-eminent centers for providing research on the brain, comprehensive services and supports to people with disabilities and their families, an extraordinary pre-school, and so much more. It is one of just 15 such centers of its kind in the world. And the cuts to National Institutes of Health funding being proposed by the US House Appropriations Committee would be devastating to the Waisman Center.

UW School of Medicine and Public Health Dean Robert Golden wrote an Op-Ed piece you can find in the Opinion section at entitled Advancing our Nation’s Health: We Must Not Retreat Now. Among other things, the column makes clear in stark terms how Congressional shortsightedness, from the sequester to common sense-less budgeting threatens life-saving research. Budget debates are healthy when they result in enhancement of the common good. There is no good to be found in abruptly ending the pursuit of cures for diseases that right now give hope to so many.
