Simpson Street Free Press helps close the gap

Published On: Apr 29 2013 08:37:25 AM CDT

We feel a sense of optimism in the community regarding new Madison School Superintendent Jen Cheatham’s initial commitment to closing the achievement gap. We’re all eagerly awaiting her plan in the spirit of collaboration.

Part of that optimism is based in ongoing efforts to close the gap, whether it’s Schools of Hope, the Urban League and Boys and Girls Clubs or, as we offer our support here, the Simpson Street Free Press.

The Simpson Street Free Press has a track record of helping kids achieve through a rigorous, journalism-based academic model. It works. The students put out a darned good newspaper and website, and by the hundreds are going on to college and careers.

We’re exited that the Free Press is in expansion mode right now. It’s opened a newsroom at Madison Newspapers, a new After-school Academic Academy at Glendale School, and on Tuesday, cuts the ribbon on Madison’s first full-time, all academics youth center at the paper’s South Towne newsroom.

More students served, more students succeeding. And the gap closes kid by kid.
