Recognition for Williamson-Marquette Neighborhood

Published On: Oct 11 2013 03:19:50 PM CDT

Neighborhoods are the backbone of strong communities. Every great city is defined in part by its neighborhoods, typically marked by their individuality as much as their amenities.

Madison has a lot of great neighborhoods, including one that has recently been recognized as such by the American Planning Association’s Great Places in America program.

The Williamson-Marquette Neighborhood was one of 30 recognized nationally to “highlight the role planning plays in adding value to communities.” There’s little doubt the Williamson-Marquette Neighborhood adds value to Madison. Mayor Soglin calls it “our So-Ho,” referencing another great neighborhood in New York City.

Neighborhoods are important and we’re lucky to have so many good ones. But they require attention and care and active citizens and good leaders. We should make sure every neighborhood in Madison has what it needs, including good planning, to be great.
