KEEP RESOURCE CENTER OPEN

06/13/13

In the vast expanse of government funded programs and the political battle over use of tax dollars it’s easy for some valuable public resources to get overlooked and, sometimes, lost.

One of those endangered resources is the UW Law School’s Resource Center on Impaired Driving. A former law enforcement officer recently brought to our attention The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s decision to end funding of the program on October 1st. We believe that’s a mistake. The Center is respected and widely used by judges, lawyers, citizens, media and others as a source of data and legal information on impaired driving issues. A great recent example is the US Supreme Court decision on blood draws in drunken driving cases. Local officials can count of the Center for up to date information on such cases. That would be lost if the Center was gone.

Impaired driving is getting worse, not better. The legal system will have to keep up. We urge the state to continue funding the Resource Center on Impaired Driving for a safer Wisconsin.
