DAIS – CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE

06/17/13

For three weeks in 2002, sniper attacks in Washington DC killed 10 people and terrorized the entire metropolitan area. It was later learned that the murders were part of a plot that was to eventually lead to the killer, John Allen Muhammad, murdering his ex-wife, Mildred Mohammad. And thus, it was yet another act of incredible violence with domestic violence in its roots. And for a while people paid attention to the epidemic of domestic violence and then, as always, attention faded.

Mildred Mohammad is in Madison this week to deliver the keynote address at Thursday’s Domestic Abuse Intervention Services Celebrate Independence Luncheon. The luncheon is sold out; a tribute to the positive energy and momentum DAIS is building for its mission and its new shelter under construction on Fordem Avenue. Mildred Mohammad’s activism is brave and inspiring. But it’s also a reminder that domestic abuse requires our constant vigilance, and not just for high profile cases. We must understand its prevalence and insidiousness before we can be successful at rooting it out.
