Arts Day 2014 - Growing Creatively

Wednesday is Arts Day in Wisconsin, a day that has annually been important to this editorial board to say nothing of our state and, for a change, we’re feeling a little optimistic.

Surely the message that Wisconsin’s arts and cultural sector is a major driver of the state’s economy has begun to resonate in communities throughout Wisconsin. The arts are integral to buy local campaigns, arts spending means job creation, cultural tourism is growing – just to name a few benefits of supporting the arts.

Equally important, lawmakers are starting to get it. The Creative Economy Development Initiative put forward by the indefatigable Anne Katz and Arts Wisconsin is a matching grant program to grow the arts economy. Bills establishing the initiative are pending in both Houses of the State Legislature and both have bipartisan support. That’s huge. But we need to keep up the momentum. We’re looking forward to getting the word out Wednesday, and every day, the support the arts is a creative and successful way to help this state grow.
