Item No. 3 on our editorial agenda under review this week is the challenge of preparing all of our children for success in school and beyond.

College and community ready, including work ready, is the idea and it’s an important one. And here’s the key, this is not and cannot be solely a school issue. It is, among other things, also an after-school issue.

A couple of weeks ago the city of Madison, the Madison School District and a group called Madison Out-of-School Time, or MOST, announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Education to host a series of community conversations on family involvement with out-of-school-time programs.

There are several, including the very successful Simpson Street Free Press model, and we need to need to know which ones work and why and how we build on those. We also need to know how family engagement affects these programs and vice versa. We welcome this addition to the opportunity gap discussion and encourage robust participation.
