START UP MILWAUKEE

03/28/13

This week’s announcement by Governor Scott Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett of a new initiative to promote entrepreneurship in Wisconsin’s largest city is a welcome and long overdue recognition of the need to spur economic development and job growth in the state. It acknowledges both the need to encourage start-ups as opposed to luring existing businesses here to create jobs, and the need for state investment in the effort.

It is also a welcome boost to Milwaukee’s prospects in the global marketplace. We’ve long promoted the reality that a strong Wisconsin needs a strong Milwaukee. And in fact the state should quickly look for similar opportunities to push for start-ups in Madison, Janesville and Beloit for starters, in ways that can complement the sectors Milwaukee will be targeting. This is the kind of strategic thinking that we’re seeing in other, more nimble states. It’s good to see Wisconsin getting in the game.
