REVERSING OBESITY TREND

12/11/12

For all the talk about and effort to reduce childhood obesity, a lot of experts have long felt the issue was too complex and too intractable to reverse. This week, new statistics suggest those experts were wrong. According to a story in the New York Times, several American cities ranging from Philadelphia to Kearney, Nebraska are showing rates of childhood obesity declining by as much as eight percent.

Eight percent is not a big number to be sure and there is no agreement on the causes of the decline. But given the data measures children’s’ weights over a ten year period, it’s hard not to acknowledge the last decade as perhaps the most active in healthy eating and exercising in generations. It certainly has had an impact. There’s healthier food in many schools, fewer snack and soda options and more celebrities and national leaders promoting healthy lifestyles. It looks like it’s working. That would have a profound effect on long term health costs and quality of life. Let’s keep at it.
