PROTECTING THE LAND
For the last couple of decades, the purchase or transfer of development rights have been important tools in helping municipalities help families continue to be able to farm increasingly valuable rural land. Dane County has been fortunate to have town leaders and three county executives now who have appreciated the value of these tools and been willing to use them.
This week, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and officials from the Town of Springfield announced an agreement that will protect thousands of acres of land in the township that was in danger of encroachment and development from both the Village of Waunakee and the City and Town of Middleton. This agreement keeps the land in agriculture and protects that delicate rural/urban balance so important to our rich county. This agreement was a long time coming. But many of the good ones are. We welcome this wise land use decision and protection of important farmland and farms.
