CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

04/02/13

Protecting our children is one of the most important responsibilities of living in a community. It is a shared responsibility, of government, non-profit agencies, public safety and health care providers, and most important citizens and neighbors. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and is alone reason enough to examine how well we’re doing keeping our kids safe. The numbers are not good. Last year reports of children abused or neglected in Dane County exceeded five thousand two hundred. That’s pretty appalling.

Now, we have terrific agencies and service providers like Safe Harbor for example that are doing great work. But they need our help. Dane County has a Coordinated Response Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect, Chaired by Cheryl Kato of the Rainbow Project, and that Task Force is helping sponsor the 2013 Child Abuse Conference on April 19th. Over 80 agencies and organizations in and around Dane County will be represented. Obviously this is year-round work. But April is the month to draw attention to it and renew our shared commitment to ending child abuse.
