ONLINE BUDGET INPUT

05/20/13

I think most of us would agree, on-line communication technology has its limitations. But more often than not, it works. And sometimes it works big.

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and City Council leaders have wisely chosen to involve citizens at the front end of the city budget process. Two community discussions have been held already, with two more to come. You can find locations, dates and times on the city’s website. You can also find a link to madison.ideascale.com. And it is just slicker’n curbside composting. Which, by the way, is one of the ideas you’ll find there. You can add a budget idea, and see how many others support it. Or you can support some of the ideas of others. You can oppose some of those ideas too if you wish. All in all it is well designed, easy to use, fun…and illustrative. We think it’s a great addition to the budget process and to citizen engagement in their government. Congrats to whoever thought of it.
