Onion ends print publication in Madison with funeral

MADISON, Wis. -

After setting down roots in Madison and being known for satire and jokes, The Onion is ending its print edition here.

The Onion was born in Madison but Thursday night was the last night the publication will be found on racks throughout the city.

In their tongue-and-check manner, The Onion said mass chaos was planned this evening with riots and burnings.

Instead, staffers had planned a funeral party for the evening with softball games and fun at Brittingham Park to reminisce about old times.

“The Onion was really important to me when I worked there and I haven’t been involved since 2003, but you know it seems like a momentous day. So I thought I’d be here,” said Scott Templeton, former Onion employee.

On the back page of Thursday’s final edition, The Onion thanked Madison for 25 memorable years.

The Onion cites more people turning to its online publication and going away from the printed pages as to why it’s no longer being issued.
