MADISON, Wis. -

City officials warn residents of water utility scammers in the area threatening to shut off customers’ water.

A Madison Water Utility customer reported that he was approached at his near west side property by two men pretending to be MWU employees, according to a release. The men demanded payment for a new water meter surcharge and pulled out large tool threatening to turn off his water if he didn’t pay.

The resident gave the men $250 in cash but was upset by the way he was treated, so he contacted MWU, officials said. They confirmed the men were scammers and passed the incident on to the Madison Police Department.

The resident told officials the men were driving a white, four-door sedan with some kind of official-looking City of Madison or MWU lettering on the side, according to the release. He also said they had some lettering or logo on their shirt lapels.

Officials would like to remind residents that there is no charge to customers for the new Project H20 metering systems being installed across Madison.

MWU employees always carry photo identification and drive MWU vehicles, officials said. Crews in the field also never take money directly from customers. The utility takes payments only online or in person at the billing office or the city treasurer’s office.
