MADISON, Wis. -

Police said a woman died after she was struck by a delivery truck Thursday morning in downtown Madison.

Madison police said a University of Wisconsin System delivery truck was backing up at North Lake Street and Mendota Court when it struck a 60-year-old woman walking behind the vehicle around 10:30 a.m.

The woman, a UW-Madison employee, was taken to a hospital but police confirmed she has died.

“We have a traffic specialist who is investigating this, but the woman was struck by the truck and knocked to the ground, and then injuries that occurred after she was on the ground are what killed her,” Madison Police Department spokesman Joel DeSpain said.

The driver told police he was pulling out slowly, and police said it wasn’t the impact that led to the woman’s death.

Madison police said they can’t find anyone who saw the incident happen Thursday morning, but the backup warning on the truck was working.

The driver of the delivery truck is in his 20s, and police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident.

Officials said it is too early to tell whether or not the driver will be cited or charged.
