Officer nearly struck by speeding car on Beltline, police say

Published On: May 07 2013 10:58:41 AM CDT

MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison police officer conducting speeding enforcement on the Beltline Highway was nearly struck Monday by a speed car weaving in and out of traffic, according to police.

The officer was seated in a lawn chair in a wide median area to the left of westbound traffic near Whitney Way when at 9:36 a.m. he said he spotted a car he clocked going 88 miles per hour.

Before the officer could call a squad car to pull the car over, the officer realized the car was heading straight at him. He said he could see that the driver was trying to pass slower vehicles.

The car slowed and returned to a traffic lane before it hit the officer. Police said the car came within 150 feet of hitting the officer.

The driver, Jordan S. Connor, 21, of Stoughton, told police he was late for work. He was cited on suspicion of reckless driving endangering safety, speeding and operating without a valid driver's license.

The traffic enforcement team issued 40 citations while working at two locations on the Beltline Highway Monday.
