Theodore A. Payne

Butch was born in Madison on November 2, 1931, to Marion and Theodore Payne. He died July 19, 2013.

He grew up in Monona, attending Nichols Elementary and East High School, graduating in the class of 1950. While attending high school, Butch excelled in football and was an all city tackle. He was a great golfer and loved the game. Golf became his career as he served as a golf course superintendent at Odana Golf Course, retiring in 1989.

Butch enlisted in the Marines in 1951, during the Korean conflict. In 1953, Butch married his high school sweetheart, Doris Gotzion, and in April they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Butch was a member of the Wisconsin Golf Course Superintendents Association. At retirement, he was recognized for 37 years of service to the City of Madison Parks Department.

He was also a long time member of the Madison Elks Lodge No. 410 where he enjoyed playing cards with his friends.

Butch was preceded in death his parents; his sisters, Delores and Sue; a brother, Dale; and a sister-in-law, Kay Gotzion.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; and his son, John. In addition, he leaves behind a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dean and Marion Gotzion; brother-in-law, David Gotzion; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior’s Deaf Lutheran Church, Dane County Humane Society, or the charity of donor’s choice.

  • PHOTOS: 27 tons of documents destroyed during BBB Shredfest 2016

    The free BBB Shredfest event Saturday offered anyone with documents containing personal information to shred up to three bags. Destroying documents is one way to protect one's identity and thwart fraudsters.

    More than 1,600 cars stopped by two Madison locations from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, and 27 tons of documents were shredded, a Better Business Bureau representative said. The sites were at SVA Certified Public Accountants, 1221 John Q Hammons Dr. and Warner Park, 2930 N. Sherman Ave.

    PHOTOS: Thousands take part in 34th annual CrazyLegs 2016

    The 34th annual CrazyLegs Classic 8K Run and 2-mile Walk Saturday raised money for UW Athletics. As of Friday night, 13,000 people had signed up to participate, and organizers expected more to register Saturday morning before the race begins in waves at 11 a.m.

    WINNERS: Pat Jenkins, 24, of Cambridge, is the top finisher in the men's category. UW law student Jessa Hackman, 24, of Madison, is the top female finisher.
