Madison - Ruth Helen (White) Johnson, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison after a long battle with dementia and Alzheimer's.
She was born April 15, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Maude (Stoddard) White. Ruth graduated from Tomah High School (1939) and from the UW-Madison in 1948 with a B.S. Degree in Home Economics.
She married Martin H. Johnson August 24, 1946. Ruth and Martin were blessed with 5 children, Martin H. III, Robert F., Kevin David, Kathryn A. and Suzanne P.
Ruth was involved in many activities including League of Women Voters, AAUW, Quilter's Circle, Church, and sports -golf, bowling, and tennis. She was an avid gardener and early advocate for herbs, and lectured on the subject in many local venues as well as on local television.
Very active in church life, Ruth participated as Sunday School Superintendent, in Vacation Bible School, and in choir--also served as pianist and organist as needed. She was a free spirit with a passion for helping people.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 67 years of married bliss, Martin; and two children, Bob (of Riverside, CA) and Kathy (of Oregon, WI); 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by 3 children, her parents, 2 brothers and a sister.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 24, at 11:00am at Glenwood Moravian Community Church, 725 Gilmore St., Madison, with Rev. Katie Van Der Linden presiding.
