PORTAGE-Phyllis Jean Stiemke, age 93, formerly of Arlington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at Columbia County Health Care Center in Wyocena. Phyllis was born on Aug. 2, 1920, in Portage, the youngest daughter of Lilly and Ernest Gage. A graduate of Portage High School, she lived in Portage until she married and then moved to Arlington, where she lived for more than 50 years.
Phyllis is survived by a daughter, Rosalie Stapleton (Tom Pfeiffer) of Verona; granddaughter, Heather (Ryan) Lee of Madison; great-granddaughter, Olivia Lee; nieces, Roberta Barger, Diane Peterson, Marilyn Hess; and a nephew, Ernie Hohlstein. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; sisters, Carol (Harold) Stiemke and Edyth (Emil) Hohlstein; and a niece, Carolyn Sheran.
Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed for her quiet strength, dignity, grace and her endearing smile. She was a talented needle crafter and was well-known for her tatting. She was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church and a former member of the Arlington Garden Club, and enjoyed gardening, reading and bird watching.
Funeral services will be held at ARLINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 103 Reagles St., Arlington, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, with Pastor Lee Bushweiler presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetary in North Leeds.
