Phyllis (Bischel) DeLong

MIDDLETON-Phyllis (Bischel) DeLong, age 86, died peacefully with her family at her side on Tuesday, June 11, 2013.

She was born on June 3, 1927, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Otto and Mary (Fischer) Bischel. She grew up in the small town of Dousman, Wisconsin. Phyllis completed high school at St. Mary’s Academy in Milwaukee. She graduated from Marquette University and taught second grade at Eighth Street Elementary School in Milwaukee for nine years. She then met the love of her life, John C. (Jack) DeLong, and retired from teaching. They were married on February 1, 1958 and raised four wonderful children together. Phyllis enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking, and singing in the church choir, but treasured the time spent with her family.

In addition to her husband of 55 years, she is survived by her children, Catherine DeLong, John R. (Bonnie) DeLong, Paul (Abby) DeLong and Philip (Carolyn) DeLong; her grandchildren, Maggie, Christopher, Stefan, Anna, Helena, and Everett; a sister, Marion Hackett; a brother, Otto (Ann) Bischel and many beloved nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST.BERNARD’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., Middleton at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 14, 2013, with Monsignor Douglas Dushack presiding. Burial will be in St. Bruno Cemetery, Dousman. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Renal Center Fund through St. Mary’s Foundation, 700 S. Mills St., Madison, WI 53715.

  • PHOTOS: 27 tons of documents destroyed during BBB Shredfest 2016

    The free BBB Shredfest event Saturday offered anyone with documents containing personal information to shred up to three bags. Destroying documents is one way to protect one's identity and thwart fraudsters.

    More than 1,600 cars stopped by two Madison locations from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, and 27 tons of documents were shredded, a Better Business Bureau representative said. The sites were at SVA Certified Public Accountants, 1221 John Q Hammons Dr. and Warner Park, 2930 N. Sherman Ave.

    PHOTOS: Thousands take part in 34th annual CrazyLegs 2016

    The 34th annual CrazyLegs Classic 8K Run and 2-mile Walk Saturday raised money for UW Athletics. As of Friday night, 13,000 people had signed up to participate, and organizers expected more to register Saturday morning before the race begins in waves at 11 a.m.

    WINNERS: Pat Jenkins, 24, of Cambridge, is the top finisher in the men's category. UW law student Jessa Hackman, 24, of Madison, is the top female finisher.
