Peter David Jefferson

FITCHBURG- Peter David Jefferson gracefully passed away on October 25, 2013, at the age of 56.

He died holding his sons’ hands and was surrounded by his wife and loved ones. Pete maintained his humor and positive attitude until the end, and was an inspiration to all that knew him. His unwavering faith and trust in God was important throughout his life, and helped him peacefully find his way home to God.

Pete was best known for his larger than life personality and charismatic smile that was known to light up a room. He was a vibrant personality that was full of life, but always found joy in the simplest things. He was most comfortable running his family business, Jefferson Fire & Safety Incorporated, which he inherited as the third generation owner from his father and grandfather. Through his business, he built a reputation of honesty and hard work in the fire service industry across the Midwest. He also served on the Fitchburg Fire Department as a volunteer. When Pete was not working he was most likely to be found pursuing his two passions; riding his Harley and playing golf. He was a member of Blackhawk Country Club since 1986, and felt blessed to have lived long enough to get his hole-in-one alongside one of his best friends in the 2010 club championship.

Pete’s happiest times were spent with his family, and it was not uncommon to hear him bragging about them as his most proud accomplishment. His devoted wife Beth, to whom he was married for 32 years, was lovingly by his side throughout his 12-year battle with cancer. In 1981, Pete met Beth (Lange) through his sister, and he would often tease that she picked him up at Buck’s. They were married on July 10, 1982, at St. Augustine’s Church in West Allis. Shortly thereafter, they established their home in Fitchburg where they have resided ever since. His son, Tyler Roth Jefferson, is succeeding him as the fourth generation president of Jefferson Fire & Safety Incorporated, and his son Ryan Chessman Jefferson (Mallory) is attending medical school in Toledo, Ohio. Pete also considered his cat, Zoey (Busy), and grand-puppy, Guinness, important members of his family.

Pete was born on May 3, 1957, in Madison. He attended Madison West High School and Middleton High School, where he was a member of the Varsity Golf Teams. Ever since his childhood, Pete loved to be active and found enjoyment in all of Wisconsin’s seasons. Growing up he was a member of West Side Swim Club, and passed his love of water sports on to his sons. He was also a member of the ski patrol at Wintergreen Ski Resort for many years, and taught his whole family how to ski. In addition, Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing baseball, and even curling in his younger years.

The depth and quality of Pete’s personality was evident in the numerous friends he kept. He was quick to make friends, and his family affectionately nicknamed him “the Ambassador of Madison.” This could be particularly appreciated during any Badger Football home game, as he was a lifelong fan.

Pete is survived by his wife, Beth; his two sons, Tyler(Jessie Bastian) and Ryan (Mallory); and his sister, Susan (Brad) Duncan. He is further survived by his mother-in-law, Margaret Lewis; father-in-law, James (Doreen) Lange; sister-in-law, Laura Lange; nieces and nephews, Meredith and Natalie Duncan, and Cassie and Zander Bednall. He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Betty Jefferson, grandparents, E.L. and Frieda Jefferson, and grandparents, Arthur and Erma Mohr.

A celebration of Pete’s life will be held at Blackhawk Country Club (3606 Blackhawk Dr, Madison, WI 53705) on Friday, November 1, 2013, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a remembrance at 6 p.m. Pete was always happy, so please come with joy and love to fondly remember his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a fund to be established in Peter’s name.
