Norman "Bird Man" Ralph Hess

Madison-Norman Ralph “Bird Man” Hess, age 79, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 21, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born October 1, 1933 to Jacob Hess and Agnes Huebsch Hess. He had battled cancer for 28 years.

He married Jeanette Loether on June 19, 1954 and they moved to Madison at that time. Norman was active in softball and bowling for many years, holding a 205 average for several years and winning many trophies. He volunteered at Bird Wise Pet Store and Fine Feathered Friends. They put on exotic bird shows for nursing homes and school children in the Midwest. His love of fishing provided many stories. Norman was known for his sense of humor which he maintained even up until his death.

Norman is survived by his wife, Jeanette; his children Debra (John) Kuban, Donna Hess, Dianne Hess, Danette (Joe) Renn, Lisa Sheahan, Dave (Susie) Hess, Jim (Anne) Hess, and Rick Hess; grandchildren Chris Nonn, Kortni Wolf, Nathan (Marinda) Burns, Kris Olson, Katy Olson, Tyler Renn, Terri Renn, Brittany Schmidt-Hess, Jamie Hess, and Jacob Hess; one great-grandson Masen Schmidt-Hess; his siblings Rita Gruber, Francis, Carol Nachreiner, and Robert, sister-in-law Marlene (Eddie) Hess, many other relatives and friends, and his birds Sammy, Tapangga, and Zoro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Eddie, brother-in-law, Gene Gruber, grandson Joey Kuban and granddaughter, Ashley Olson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 26, 2013, at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Ave, Madison. A visitation will take place at the church from 10am until the time of service. Burial will be at St. Luke’s Cemetery in Plain, WI.
