Marcella “Sally” Hammerly

New Glarus, WI/Monticello, WI/Marcella “Sally” Hammerly, age 94, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the New Glarus Home.

She was born on December 18, 1918 in the blue house on the Streiff farm at New Glarus to her parents David and Anna (Zimmerman) Kundert. Sally graduated from New Glarus High School.

As a young lady Sally worked bottling soda and at Matzinger’s Bakery, she also worked for several years as Post Master in New Glarus.

On May 3, 1943 she was united in marriage to Walter Hammerly at the Swiss Evangelical and Reformed Church in New Glarus. Sally and Walter farmed together until 1971 after Walter’s passing.

She then worked for twenty years running the kitchen at the Midwest Livestock Sales Barn in Monticello retiring in 1990. Sally was a member of the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello. She enjoyed bowling and as a member of the Ladies’ Friendly Bowling League she participated in many state and national tournaments. Sally also enjoyed music and dancing with her friend and companion of over 20 years C. J. “Doc” Klooster. As members of the Roger Bright Polka Club they had the opportunity to travel throughout the country to dance. Sally also enjoyed playing cards and was an avid sports fan taking a keen interest in almost any sport being broadcast especially the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers. She very much loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Sally would light up during their visits and at family gatherings.

Sally is survived by her daughter Sally (Jack) Stenbroten of Monticello, WI, son John “J.D.” (Elena Hartwell) Hammerly of New Castle, WA, grandchildren; Nikki L. (Tom Johnson) Ferguson of Avondale, AZ, Shelley R. Ferguson of Middleton, WI, Aja Hammerly of Seattle, WA, and Elyse (Dan Feiler) Hammerly of Everett, WA, a great-grandson Kyle Dean Pederson of Avondale, AZ, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter, brothers Reumond, David, and Sylvan Kundert, friend and companion C.J. “Doc” Klooster, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Frank and Emma Nussbaum.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, 416 E. Lake Ave., Monticello, WI with the Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, Monticello, WI.

Relatives and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of service on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello.

The Zentner-Beal Funeral Home of New Glarus is assisting the family.

The family would like to thank the compassionate and caring staffs of St. Clare Friedensheim, the New Glarus Home, and Monroe Clinic Hospice along with all of those who helped with many acts of kindness for Sally over the years.
