Lois Jane, or Janey, as she was affectionately known to her family and friends, passed away in Sacramento, California, on August 28 at the age of 87.
Although she was fortunate to enjoy a long happy, healthy life, over the past year she suffered from myelodysplastic syndrome (pre-leukemia). Recently this illness took a turn for the worse and she suffered complications which led to her death.
Janey was born on September 13, 1925 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. Her father was David Warren Lane, a chemical engineer and WWI pilot (1891-1938). Her mother was Minerva Jane Lane Reese (1899-1995), who operated a beauty parlor in Dodgeville for many decades.
Janey married John Edwin (“Jack”) Harrison in 1942 and they had three children, John Scott Harrison, Connie Eileen Sveum and Carol Elaine McKernan. The family had a happy life together. However, Jack died in 1991 after a long illness.
In 1993 Janey married Ralph (“Pidge”) Davies and moved to El Dorado Hills, California with him. They had two decades of happiness together.
Janey was an extraordinary woman who cared deeply about not only her own families but also about all those she knew. Even the spouses of her children, and others as well, came to think of her as their own mother. And late in life even some neighbor children came to view her as an additional grandmother. Janey had a very large and loving extended family.
Janey had a wide range of interests, including reading, history, Native American culture and especially genealogy. She had many homemaking skills and was a wonderful cook. She also worked as a beautician in her mother’s salon. She possessed abundant energy and was a hard worker. She was busy her entire life, mostly through concern and thoughts for family and friends.
Janey is survived by her husband, Ralph “Pidge” Davies, her three children, Scott (Sara) Harrison of San Francisco, CA, Connie (Jerry) Sveum of Beloit, WI and Carol (Dennis) McKernan of Mineral Point, WI. Her grandchildren Scott (Julie) Sveum of Arvada, CO, Tim Sveum of Bullfrog, UT, Denny McKernan of Madison, WI, Shawn McKernan of Platteville, WI and Candi (Steve) Fitzsimmons of Darlington, WI. Her great grandchildren, Clara and Caleb McKernan of Platteville, WI, Summer and Brett Sveum of Arvada, CO, Wiley Niles of Cuba City, WI and Darby and Sadie Fitzsimmons of Darlington, WI. Ralph’s family, Bill (Sydney) Davies of El Dorado Hills, CA, Vicki (Richard) Salmon of Eugene, Oregon and granddaughter Mysha Davies of El Dorado Hills, CA. A celebration of life observance was held in El Dorado Hills for Janey’s California family and friends on August 31.
Janey was a wonderful woman full of love for family and friends, and deeply loved in turn by them. She will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
