MADISON -

Kathy Tierney, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at All Saints Assisted Living in Madison, surrounded by loved ones.

Kathy was born on March 18, 1941, in Madison to Ben and Grace (Hartel) Kahl. She was the fifth of five children. Kathy was a graduate of Edgewood High School Class of 1960, in Madison. At Edgewood, she met her future husband Paul Tierney. Paul and Kathy were married on August 31, 1963 and enjoyed 41 wonderful years together, before Paul preceded her in death on October 6, 2004.

As the consummate housewife and mother, Kathy enjoyed cooking and entertaining. Many recall her great excitement at the purchase of a double oven to more easily construct her wonderful meals. She worked in various dental offices over the years (including Dr. Jerry Olson and Dr. Jean Piper) and enjoyed her daily interaction with patients.

Kathy had a very strong faith in God and could often be found at mass at St. Maria Goretti church where she was a parishioner for over 40 years. After retirement, her faith (and Sr. Marge) led her to a rewarding volunteer commitment at All Saints Assisted Living. Many smiled as she referred to her volunteer position as her "job." Her interaction with the residents of All Saints Assisted Living was hugely beneficial for both Kathy and the residents. She was happiest when she was helping others and they benefited from the care and love she bestowed on them.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul; her parents; and her sister, Patricia Kahl.

She is survived by and will be dearly missed by her loving children, Greg (Kathy Sippola) of Sauk City and Tami (Scott) Stensby, of Lincolnshire, Illinois; her brother, Ben Kahl of Madison; two sisters, Sister Mary Jo Kahl FSM of Milwaukee and Margaret (Robert) Skolaski of Madison; four adoring grandchildren, Kyle and Kallie Tierney of Sauk City and Christopher (Topher) and Alexis (Lexi) Stensby of Lincolnshire, IL; her close friends Peggy, Ron, Lisa and Jenna Marty, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Ave., Madison, on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Monsignor Michael Burke will officiate with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services at the church on Wednesday.

For those who cannot join the family on Wednesday, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, Madison.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the parish of St. Maria Goretti or the Arthritis Foundation to help search for a cure for the disease that caused Kathy great pain over the years.

Her family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of All Saints Assisted Living, who made Kathy’s journey to join her Savior as comfortable as possible and to Agrace Hospice for their support of Kathy and her family in her final days.
