Jeffrey D. "Jeff" Baxter

Jeffrey D. “Jeff” Baxter, age 73, died unexpectedly on Monday, September 30, 2013 at his home. He was born on April 22, 1940 in Waukesha to Frederic and Irma (Borchers) Baxter.

Jeff was a 1958 graduate of West Bend High School and a graduate of UW-Platteville where he earned a teaching degree. On the very first day of teaching for the Portage school district, he met another teacher, Betty Sternitzky. He went home that weekend and told his parents he had met the girl he was going to marry. On August 22, 1964, Jeff was married to Betty in Granton, Wisconsin. Jeff later taught industrial arts in Columbus before ultimately moving to the engineering department at Oscar Meyer in Madison, retiring in 1996.

He was the owner and operator of Math-Aire airfield in Columbus where he enjoyed sharing his passion for flying with his sons, Stephen and David. Jeff ventured in building an experimental airplane and ultra-lights with his good friend Larry Daane. For many years, he spent the hunting season in Cornucopia, Wisconsin at O’Bryon’s Deer Camp with his second family. Jeff was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of Columbus; two sons, David (Michelle) of Columbus and Stephen of Menasha; two grandchildren, Emma and Mitchell; a great grandson, Mayson; two sisters-in-law, Barbara (Dale) Teter and Bonnie (Dan) Boyum; a brother-in-law, Ernie (Rhoda) Sternitzky; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Devon Baxter; a nephew, Michael Boyum; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Herbert and Esther (Kalsow) Sternitzky.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, Columbus. Rev. Robert V. Moberg will officiate. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Granton, Wisconsin. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, or the charity of one’s choice.
