Published On: Feb 21 2014 11:51:21 PM CST

JANESVILLE--- Floyd Kowal was called home to his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Floyd was born on Nov. 17, 1923, to Harry and Mary (Kril) Kowal in Janesville.

Floyd grew up in the Springbrook neighborhood and graduated from Janesville High School in 1942. After attending UW-Wisconsin, where he earned a letter as a member of the UW Boxing Team, Floyd joined the Navy to serve his country. Floyd was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 6, 1946.

Upon returning to Janesville, Floyd accepted a position in the Accounting Department at General Motors. Later, Floyd's entrepreneurial abilities led him to form partnerships and establish businesses in Janesville. Floyd owned and operated Modern Tile & Lumber for more than 40 years. During those years, Floyd strived to meet the needs of his customers.

Floyd was loyal to his faith and community. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, where he served on the Stewardship Committee. Floyd supported the community in many ways: he was a Goodwill Ambassador, contributed to the Rotary Gardens, the Janesville Performing Arts Center, and the Janesville Humane Society.

Floyd was a member of the Janesville Noon Kiwanis Club where he served as the club president and later was appointed the District Lt. Governor. Later, he transferred from the Noon Club to the Golden K Club. Floyd served as a board member for the Salvation Army and was elected to the Rock County Board of Supervisors where he served a two-year term. Floyd's biggest treasure was his family.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary; son, Mark; daughters, Lisa (Blaine) Snyder – granddaughters, Lindsey & Tory; and Julie (Jim) Schoen – Emily; stepdaughters, Paula Winke – Elizabeth, Kristin, & Meghan; and Tamra (Grant) Jones; stepsons, David (Nicole) Potter – Madison, Courtland, Colby & Mallory; and Stephen (Cheri Dahl) Potter – Chester. Floyd is also survived by his brother, Harry (Peggy); special nephew, Dan Kowal and many other relatives and friends including members of the "Couples Club." Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth (Will) Kowal; his brothers, Ernest, Robert and twin, George; and sisters, Jean Jerome and Olga Bodinar.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at ST. MATTHEW'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH with Rev. James Janke officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church, the Salvation Army, or Heartland Hospice. For on-line condolences and registry: www.schneiderfuneraldirectors.com

The family would like to thank the staffs of Huntington Memory Care and Heartland Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
