LAKE MILLS/MIDDLETON-Elaine L. Strickland, age 92, of Lake Mills, formerly of Middleton, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013, at Brook Gardens in Lake Mills.

Elaine Flora Lila Horn was born on Sept. 7, 1920, in Oshkosh, the daughter of Ernest and Clara (Boyer) Horn. She grew up in the Helenville area.

On July 25, 1941, she married John Strickland in St. Louis, Mo. They lived in Germany while he served in the military, later settling in Middleton. Elaine worked as a secretary for many years, and in her early 50’s she earned her pilot’s license. She was an active member of the “Ninety-Nines” (an international organization of women pilots) and competed in air derbies throughout the Midwest. She also enjoyed camping and golfing. Elaine was an avid Brewers fan and loved her German Shepherd dogs and many cats throughout the years, especially her beloved cat, Bubba.

Elaine is survived by a brother, Earl (Jean) Horn of Fort Atkinson; a nephew; and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John on July 16, 2006; sister, Evora Brunk; and a nephew, Rick Brunk.

A private graveside service is planned at Zion Cemetery in Helenville.
