Edward James Johnson

Edward James Johnson, age 86 of Waunakee, formerly of Blanchardville died on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the Waunakee Manor.

He was born on June 12, 1927 in a log cabin between Ridgeway and Spring Green to George & Gunhild (Larson) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm in rural Blanchardville, which he farmed all his working years. He started school in Blanchardville speaking only Norwegian. He was in the Air Force from 1951-1955. He married Virginia Mae Johnson on October 27, 1951 in the Liberty Lutheran Church in Deerfield. In 1958 they settled permanently into farming on the Johnson home farm. He was a member of the Blanchardville Lutheran Church, and was a 50 year member of the Dobson-Johnson American Legion Post. He loved playing cards, listening to and dancing to old-time music, and traveling on bus trips in later years. In 1990 Ed and Virginia sold their farm and built their retirement home on a corner of the family farm. A highlight of his life was a 2004 trip to Norway to meet family.

Ed is survived by three children, Bruce (Lisa Fangmann) Johnson of Madison, Sandra (Jeff) Bowen of Janesville, and Susan (Kenneth) Massey of Middleton; Six grandchildren, Kelli (Shawn) Markwald, Danelle (Jacek) Kraszewski, Corey Massey, Maron (Seth) Massey Collins, Naomi (Dannon) Massey Haas, and Scott Bowen; four great grandchildren, Adam, Troy, Savannah and Klay; one sister, Margaret Arneson of Stoughton; companion Beverly Miller and Ed’s “buddy” Jim Miller, both of Waunakee; and in-laws, Norma Dibbert, Arlyn & Helen Johnson, Gloria & Ronald Evert and Jim Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Virginia who died on November 26, 1999.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church. Rev. Dan Dibbert, nephew of Ed, of the Grace Lutheran Church in Cambridge is officiating. Burial is in the Graceland Cemetery in Blanchardville. Friends may call on Thursday evening, July 25, 2013 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Saether Funeral Home in Blanchardville, and from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church on Friday.
