David Wineke

Published On: Feb 22 2014 03:54:18 PM CST

David "Rocky" Wineke, 66, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at University Hospital in Madison after a brief illness.

He lived his life on his own terms – and those terms were pretty good.

They led him to serve his country in Vietnam and to serve his community for 31 years as a Madison police officer.

They led him to 42 years of fortunate marriage to his wife, Susan, to proud parenthood of his sons, Tony and Steven and to be the doting grandfather of Wyatt and Nolan, sons of Tony and Lisa Basile, and to Olivia, daughter of Steven, who, while not literally born into the family was always a treasured granddaughter.

They led him to a lifetime of loyal friendships with high school buddies, professional colleagues, golfing partners and, even, his own seven brothers.

But David's terms were his own terms. For years, he resisted being promoted on the police force, explaining with somewhat rolling eyes that he had no desire to return to working nights and weekends away from his family. His years of service gave him the opportunity to expand patrol to include motorcycle, and was on the original bike patrol, and finally to his dream job of Hit and Run Investigator, which he held until his retirement. When a Dane County coroner was murdered several years ago, David was the first officer through the door to offer help, and continued his life and career with willingness to help others. After years of building a cabin (with no plans on paper) he arrived one day to learn it had burned to the ground, though this was a tragic loss, he almost immediately purchased a mobile home, without ever looking back, it became David and Susan's new vacation home. Enjoyed with family and friends.

He loved to play golf with buddies Rick, Rob and Fred, loved to drink brandy, loved to go on annual “muskey hunts” with buddies Nick and Mike, loved to smoke tiny cigars, loved to drink, loved to smoke and loved to be with his family.

David and Susan Clements were married on June 19, 1971 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Wineke and Jennie (Lanigan) Wineke; by Susan's parents, Edwin and Lily (Storteig) Clements; by a brother, Jim; and by an aunt, Dorothy Wineke.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by siblings, William, John, Daniella, Michael, Thomas, and Joseph; and an aunt Helen Wineke.

The family expresses gratitude to the staff of the UW Hospital Coronary Intensive Care Unit, the hospital's Palliative Care Unit, and to Dr. Sara Johnson and her staff.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 413 Dempsey Road, with Fr. Randy Timmerman and the Rev. Bill Wineke presiding.
