Published On: Jul 12 2013 01:58:30 PM CDT

Madison, WI – David E. Matson, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home on, Wednesday, July 10, 2013.

He was born on April 13, 1930 in Birchwood, WI, the son of Emil and Marie (Larson) Matson. He was united in marriage to Joanne V. Gregersen on August 29, 1953 in Inger, MN. He moved his family to Madison in the early 60’s, believing it was the Lord’s directing. Over the years he worked at Gisholt Machine Co., Madison Metro Bus Co., PDQ and Madison East High School. He also pastored, had a radio program and traveled with the Zion Passion Play film. Most Madisonians would know him for his singing of gospel hymns at the Capital building and around the Capital Square. Ten years after losing his first wife, he was blessed with a second wonderful marriage to Ileen Mason of Monona, WI. His family and friends best remember him for his jokes, his smile, his sweet and gentle personality and his immense love for the Lord.

His life could best be summed up with these verses, 2 Samuel 22:20-23, “He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.”

He is survived by his children: Rita Damon and Cynde (Tim) Matthews; grandchildren, Patrick (Kari) and Jason Damon, Drew (Jessie), Jana, Holly, Carol Anne and Abigail Matthews; great-grandchildren, Halie and Lacie Damon and Aaron and Emma Matthews; and nephew, Dan Erickson.

He was preceded in death by both of his wives, Joanne Gregersen (36 years) and Ileen Mason (12 years); granddaughter, Charity Matthews; brother, Ernest Matson and sister, Beulah Erickson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., with Pastor Tim Matthews and Drew Matthews officiating. Visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the funeral home and also from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens following the service.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the caregivers at Legacy Gardens for all of their years of loving care; also to Southern Care Hospice for their incredible personal devotion to Dad.

  • PHOTOS: Madison store helps collect hundreds of Teddy bears for police

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
