Daniel John Kelley, 67, of Mauston passed away Monday, July 29, 2013.
Dan was born on July 28, 1946, the son of John and Irene (Riddlestine) Kelley in Mauston, Wisconsin.
Dan was a loyal, honest person who had two great loves in his life: golf and hunting! To be considered his friend was an honor and his loyalty knew no bounds. Dan was an avid golfer who was the first member at Trapper's Turn Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells; he was proud of this prestigious golf club and each summer while home in Wisconsin, he could be found on the golf course with some of his friends. While he never experienced his own hole-in-one, he did witness his friend's hole-in-one at Trappers Turn and was just as enthused as if it had happened to him. He also golfed at his favorite courses in Las Vegas while he was there in the winters with the golf buddies and friends he made in that region of the country!
His second love occurred each year around Thanksgiving in Wisconsin: Hunting the whitetail bucks that he kept track of before hunting season each year! These times, again, were shared with friends who enjoyed Dan's hospitality and enthusiasm for the sport. Part of the fun of these gatherings was the food that they enjoyed as well and although Dan could put it away with the best of them, he always kept his svelte figure. His home walls were covered with his trophy bucks, elk and even a turkey.
He enjoyed the beautiful home he built in the bluffs of Mauston along with all the friends he had living around him who shared the labor of their fields with Dan. He appreciated everything that friends brought over and he, as well, shared his bounty. We recently checked on his tomatoes while he was in the hospital to ensure that they were not too dry.
Dan actually had another activity that he loved (and part of the reason he enjoyed Las Vegas), which was gambling! And, he was darn lucky! When he'd call periodically you could bet it was because he wanted to brag about his latest win! And he prided himself in the fact that he enjoyed complimentary meals from the casinos in Las Vegas and Wisconsin, thereby saving him food bills.
His golf buddies enjoyed those meals and playing alongside of Dan at their favorite spots. He had a strategy with his fun and was very wise with his hobby. Dan will be missed by those of us who were lucky enough to be called his friend. It is good to know that he is with his beloved parents whom he loved and took care of while they were living.
God bless Dan Kelley, our friend~ Dan is survived by his brothers James, William, and Michael, nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
