MADISON-Auta “Art” Arlis Sandmire, age 90, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2013, at Haack’s Tendercare in Sun Prairie.
Art was born on April 3, 1923, in Richland Center. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed in Japan. Art was employed at Oscar Mayers for 38 years as a butcher, and retired in 1985. His hobbies over the years included farming, camping, gardening, quilt making, reading, walking, listening to country music, and watching the Brewers, Packers, and Badgers.
Art is survived by his wife of 55 years, Valerie (Christensen) Sandmire; sons, Roy (Cheryl) Sandmire of Sun Prairie, Rick Sandmire of Sun Prairie, and Jeff (Cindy) Sandmire of Cottage Grove; grandchildren, Tabatha Fried, Nicholas Fried, Mariah Sandmire, and Kaytie Sandmire; sisters, Janice Uphoff of Cottage Grove, and Janet Frost of Granite City, Ill.; brothers, Cameron “Ty” Sandmire of North Freedom, Dr. Herbert (Crystal) Sandmire of Green Bay, Lyle “LaVaughn” Sandmire of Canton, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Robert (Carolyn) Olsen of Finlayson, Minn., Ray (Nancy) Olsen of Tomah, and Gerald (Phyllis) Olsen of Tomah; sister-in-law, Jane Emery of Hudson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl “Glen” Sandmire and Bernadine “Lois” (Patch) of Cottage Grove; son, Nels Sandmire of Madison; brother, James Sandmire of Hub City; sisters, Irvine “Cardell” Tadder of Racine, and Corinne Seago of Lilesville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Audrey Sandmire; and brothers-in-law, Wilna Seago, Bernard Tadder, Nels Olsen, Glen Olsen, and Theron Uphoff.
Funeral services will be held at MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5202 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, with the Rev. Jeff Vanden Heuvel presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services on Tuesday.

The family extends their deep appreciation to the staff at Haack’s Tendercare for their care of Art during the past four years, and to Agrace HospiceCare for all their support and care these past two months.
