Arleen was born on Dec. 3, 1933, in Pawtucket, RI to Harry J. and Elizabeth M. (Valentine) Bardsley. Arleen grew up in Lincoln, RI. She attended Oberlin College in Ohio, and later transferred to Ithaca College where she graduated in 1955 with a degree in music education. She married Robert T. Wood in 1961 while working as a music teacher in Long Island, NY, and in the course of following him around the world, she had five children: Elizabeth, Peter, Daniel, John and Andrew.
