Published On: Feb 14 2013 05:16:08 AM CST

MONONA/MADISON-Walter P. Schulze, age 84, completed his journey at Oak Park Place East in Madison on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013. Walter was born on March 21, 1928, in East Chicago, Ill., the son of Paul Schulze and Hiltrud Schlegel. His father passed away three months after his birth and the family relocated to North Freedom, Wisconsin to be near family. Walter graduated high school in 1946 and joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He began his career in financing and banking at Thorpe Finance Company, managing offices in LaCrosse, Darlington, Reedsburg, Madison, and Monona for ten years. Walter married Margret Steele on Aug. 12, 1967, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Westport. They bought their dream farm near North Freedom while Walter worked as a supervisor at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant in Sauk County. When the plant began to close down, he went to work at General Leasing Company in Madison. Walter then started working as a loan officer at the Monona Grove State Bank on Monona Drive, which became CBI, Valley Bank, M&I Bank, and now BMO Bank. He was a member of the Baraboo Elks Club and the Monona Grove Businessmen’s Club for many years. He loved volunteering for the bank’s Meals on Wheels and continued doing so until his health deteriorated. Walter loved people, especially joking around with them. When health problems forced him to walk, he really came to enjoy it and stopped along the way to chat with everyone.

Walter is survived by his wife, Marge; sons, Steve and Scott (Kristin); his special grandchildren, Max and Lily; sister, Edith Anstett; brother-in-law, Duane Howe; sister-in-law, Mary Steele; and many special nieces and nephews. He is further survived by Pam Schneider, the daughter he never had; and Dan Chart, the third son he never had, both of whom are loved so very much. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Delores Vorndron; brothers-in-law, Clarence Vorndron, Fred Anstett, Bill Steele, and Schuck Joe; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Howe, Delores Joe, and Colleen Brusen; stepfather, Frank Hanley; step-siblings, Howard, Mike, Pat, Kitty, Marie, and their spouses.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, with Father Bart Timmerman presiding and military honors being conducted following the service. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom at a later date. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, with a scripture service at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Walter’s name to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Now when the angels ask him how he is he can again say the words he always did, “Oh, just fine!” or as he said in later life, “older, no smarter” and smile. We love you and will miss you so much.
