Robert O. Birkrem

WATERLOO/DEERFIELD – Robert O. Birkrem, age 88, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013, surrounded by his family at the Veterans Hospital in Madison. He was born Dec. 13, 1924, in Deerfield, the only child of Otto and Ida (Vethe) Birkrem. Robert married Wilma (Frey) Birkrem on December 14, 1945. After graduating from Deerfield High School, Robert joined the U.S. Navy. He worked for the City of Madison, City of Waterloo and was a TV repairman and installer, working for Evans Radio & T.V. and part time for Emmet DeGolier. Robert also farmed in Deefield for many years and was a school bus driver. He played sports in High School, home talent baseball and slow pitch. Robert also enjoyed classic country music, square dancing, fishing, hunting, bird watching, the north woods and watching the Packers, Badgers and Brewers. He most enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. Robert was a life time member of St. Paul’s Liberty Lutheran Church in Deerfield.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma; children, Warren (Connie), Janis (DuWayne) Schumacher, Beverly (Dan) Schulz, Sharon (Ron) Holzapfel, David (Valerie), Douglas, Carrie (Mark) Besch, Gail (Gary) Duckert, Todd (Lisa); son-in-law, Lee Fassbender; 37 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Barbara; daughter-in-law, Constance Birkrem; and longtime friend, Lloyd Anderson.

Funeral services will be held on Wed. April 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at ST. PAUL’S LIBERTY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3494 Oak Park Rd., Deerfield, with the Rev. Richard Blomker presiding. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Madison. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the church and also on Wed. from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorials may be made in Robert’s name to St. Paul’s Liberty Lutheran Church.

Visitation:
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the church and also on Wed. from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Service:
Funeral services will be held on Wed. April 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at ST. PAUL’S LIBERTY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3494 Oak Park Rd., Deerfield, with the Rev. Richard Blomker presiding.

Cemetery:
Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Madison.

    The free BBB Shredfest event Saturday offered anyone with documents containing personal information to shred up to three bags. Destroying documents is one way to protect one's identity and thwart fraudsters.

    More than 1,600 cars stopped by two Madison locations from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, and 27 tons of documents were shredded, a Better Business Bureau representative said. The sites were at SVA Certified Public Accountants, 1221 John Q Hammons Dr. and Warner Park, 2930 N. Sherman Ave.
