Ralph Bjork

Ralph Bjork, 70, of Platteville, lost his battle to multiple sclerosis on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Southwest Health Center Hospital, Platteville.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday January 23, 2013 at the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville. Rev. Jeff Pederson will officiate. Burial will be Hillside Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service, on Wednesday, at the church. Ralph was born in Austin, MN on October 18, 1942 the son of Herbert and Arlene (Lesch) Bjork. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Miersma on December, 5 1969 in Holland, MI. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and received his doctorate in physics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He taught computer science and physics at St. Olaf College, Luther College, and the University of Wisconsin Platteville. After retirement he authored two books. The first was titled 'God's Name is Jesus' in 2001 and the second was 'Creation' in 2007. Ralph was a member of the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville, where he was an active member. Ralph helped start and facilitate Brothers and Sisters In Christ at Luther College and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at UWP. He was an avid runner until he was physically unable due to the Multiple Sclerosis at which point he turned to cycling and walking with his wife. He and Kathy were proud of being the 2009 citizens of the year for Platteville.

Ralph especially loved his wife, Kathy, and family. He is survived by his four sons: Erik Bjork of Vernon Hills, IL; David (Nicole) Bjork of Oconomowoc, WI; Jacob (Katie) Bjork of Madison, WI; Jonathan (Laura) Bjork of Madison, WI; seven grandchildren, Ethan, Anna, Casie, Allison, Cole, Lauren, Lily; sister Darla of Manhattan, NY; sister Gayla of Canada. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife Kathy and his parents.

  • PHOTOS: Viewers drop off sensitive documents for Shredfest

    The WISC-TV studio parking lot was busy with hundreds of viewers bringing their sensitive documents to be destroyed as part of Shredfest with the Better Business Bureau Saturday morning.

    A combined 1,295 cars dropped off bags of papers at WISC-TV on Raymond Road and SVA Certified Public Accountants firm on John Q. Hammons Drive.

    News 3 and Better Business Bureau team members unloaded bags of documents from viewers' cars and Pellitteri Waste Systems' Data Destruction team put the papers into the shredding trucks.
