Leona Elizabeth McCarragher

Madison Leona Elizabeth McCarragher, age 91, of Madison, died peacefully Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. She was born in Hollandale on March 18, 1921 the daughter of the late John and Matilda (Collins) McCarragher.

Leona touched so many lives in her 42 years of teaching children, including her 32 years at Shorewood Hills Public School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree at Platteville State Teacher’s College and her Master’s Degree at UW-Madison. Leona was an active volunteer throughout her life, including at St. Mary’s Adult Day Care, and at Our Lady Queen of Peace in many roles, including Sacristan, greeter and minister of Bread and Wine. She was a member of Catholic Daughters and Women’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Dane County Shamrock Club and Hollandale Auxiliary.

Leona is survived by a brother, Paul McCarragher; a brother-in-law, John Azzalino; her cousin, Therese McCarragher who was like a sister to her; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Viola Azzalino; and her sister-in-law, Marietta McCarragher.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 noon on Friday, March 1, 2013 at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 Owen Drive, with Msgr. Kenneth Fiedler presiding. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Hollandale at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1 and a reception will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hollandale. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be directed to Our Lady Queen of Peace in Leona’s memory.     The Henry Vilas Zoo will light up nights this holiday season with its new Zoo Lights event. The Zoo Lights exhibit will offer zoo-goers a stroll down Candy Cane Lane with festive lights and sounds. Zoo organizers announced the Zoo Light exhibit Wednesday and said thousands of lights will transform the zoo into a winter wonderland Nov. 25-Jan. 1.

    Admission is $7 and Zoo Lights will run Thursdays through Sundays beginning at 5:30 p.m.
