MADISON/WAUNAKEE- John A. Pobiecke, age 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long illness, on Saturday, December 29, 2012. He was born in Knowlton on March 27, 1919, the son of Michael and Elizebeth (Macek) Pobjecky, the fourth of ten children.

His parents emigrated to the U.S. from Czechoslovakia. He learned to speak English in a one room schoolhouse, the type in which he himself later taught for 12 years. He graduated from Stevens Point High School and attended Teachers College in Stevens Point. Besides teaching he worked at Badger Ordinance during WWII, where he met and married Doris Thompson. In 1948, he joined Oscar Mayer Co., where he remained 36 years until retirement.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing, bowling (he missed a 300 game by 3 points), and was an avid Dart Ball player for many years. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school and home Bible study. John remained physically active all his life, taking pride in his home and yard, and choosing to be out of doors whenever possible. He was still using his riding lawn mower six months prior to his death.

John also enjoyed travel, including trips in the U.S., where he visited most of the 48 states, a trip to Europe and Holy Lands in the 70s, many leisurely weeks spent at Devil’s Lake and many Sunday drives in Wisconsin. But the most important thing to John was his family. He made every attempt to attend all family functions.

After the death of his first wife, Doris, he married Irene Anderson in 1998, with whom he lived happily until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Judy Auclair (Dar Ishmael), and John W. Pobiecke; grandchildren, Tina Crews and Mike Meidl; great-grandchildren, Brandon LaBelle and Katlyn Meidl; a stepdaughter, Lisa Hughes (Don) and her children and grandchildren; sisters, Cecelia Jonaitis, and Rose Archibald; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; a daughter, Faye Meidl; his parents; four brothers; and three sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, January 2, 2012, at LAKEVIEW LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4001 Mandrake Road, with the Rev. Dean Kirst presiding. Burial will follow at Lakeview Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Wednesday.
