MADISON-John D. “Jack” Richgels, age 71, of Madison, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012. John was born on June 11, 1941, and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1959. After serving a four year tour in the Coast Guard, he attended MATC for two years where he obtained a Business Administration degree, and then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for two additional years. For the bulk of his career, he worked as a Manager at Hanson Storage, which later became Reynolds Transfer and Storage, until his retirement in 2005. John (known by most of his friends and family as Jack) was a member of St. Patrick’s Church for the majority of his life until 2005 when he joined St. Bernard’s Church. He enjoyed dancing, music, following the stock market, going to the library and, several evenings a week, he enjoyed the music, the liveliness, as well as the company of his many friends at the East Side VFW. Jack was always very organized and, in that same spirit, having begun preparations years earlier in anticipation of his death, Jack himself once wrote, “It’s going to seem strange not getting up in the morning.”

Jack is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sue (Randall) Richgels; two daughters, Lynn Richgels (Todd Schultz) and Cindy Richgels (Brian Sullivan); two sisters, Elizabeth (Robert) Hovey, Irene Regan (Jim); brother, Randy (Delores) Richgels; and several grandchildren, Kylie and Lacey Richgels, and Evan, Eliana, and Adeline Sullivan Richgels. His parents, Frances and Alfred Richgels, preceded him in death in 1982 and 1992 respectively. A Memorial Mass will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Avenue, Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, with Monsignor Michael Hippee presiding. Preceding the mass, there will be visitation at the church from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John’s name to Paralyzed Veterans of America or to a charity of your choice.
