Gerda Ann Scharfenberg

Gerda Ann Scharfenberg, 82 of Mauston passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Fair View Nursing Home with her family at her side.

She was born on March 19, 1930 in Boaz, Wisconsin the daughter of Ernest and Ethyl Barnes. She lived in the Richland Center area and graduated as salutatorian from Ithaca High School in 1947. She moved to Mauston, Wisconsin where she met the love of her life Harry W. Scharfenberg.

Gerda was a graduate from Juneau County Normal School and later UW Stevens point, majoring in elementary education. She started her teaching career at Cat Tail Country School and later at St. Cecelia in Wisconsin Dells, Necedah Elementary School and retiring from Castle Rock Elementary School in 1992. Gerda had a very special way of caring about kids touching many of their lives.

Gerda Loved gardening, quilting, playing cards and visiting shut in members from her church. She treasured her time with her children, grandchildren and friends.

Gerda is survived by her three children William (Kristine) Scharfenberg of Mauston, Joel (Clara Carey) Scharfenberg of Madison, Sally (John) Rose of Tomah, eight grandchildren Billie Jo Scharfenberg, James (Meg) Scharfenberg, Thom (Jessie) Scharfenberg, Paul (Abbey) Rose, Elizabeth Rose, Tessa (Matt Klein) Rose, Matt Rose, and Megean Swenson, seven great grandchildren Sydnie, Anna, Mary, Katelyn, Kaleb, Maci and soon to arrive Olsen.

Gerda was preceded in death by her husband Harry of 57 years, her brother Richard Barnes and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 8, 2013 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mauston where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be at the Lindina Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Fair View Nursing Home and Dr. Bjelland for their loving care of Gerda.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice Touch, Eyes of Hope Animal Shelter or the charity of your choice.
