Fred F. Daily age 82 of Mauston, WI, formerly of Ladysmith, WI was born May 21, 1930 at Bruce, WI. He died Jan. 30, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hillsboro, WI. Fred was born in Bruce, WI, the youngest child of seven, born to John and Flossie (Ammerman) Daily. He graduated from Bruce High School, class of 1948. He joined the Navy in 1950, serving on the USS Oriskany and was a veteran of the Korean War. Fred married Janet Theesfield in 1953. They were married for 59 years. Fred spent his career working in the telephone industry. He worked for the Bruce Phone Company, Henkels & McCoy, Chibardun Telephone Company, Bentheimer Engineering, and finally retiring from Cen Com Telephone in 1986. He had worked his way up from climbing poles with slivers in his legs to fix lines during thunder storms to being a manager who got to fly to Alaska to work out deals with the Inuit Indians. After his retirement he returned to Ladysmith and took on a second career as a woodworker. Fred was an avid sportsman, who loved fishing and hunting. He got a hole in one golfing and perfect game in bowling. He also enjoyed gardening and had a passion for roses. He was best at telling stories. He was a lifetime member of the Weyerhaueser VFW Post 5780.
Fred is survived by his wife Janet of Mauston; daughters Kathy (John) Green of Mauston, and Diane Thompson (Dan Engler) of Oshkosh, son James (Barb) Daily of Chatfield, MN, grandsons, Brandon Green and Joseph Daily, granddaughter Shannon Daily, brother-in-law Walter Weinert of Bruce, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, extended family and friends. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jack, Art, Bill, Robert and sisters Gene, Geneva.
The family would like to thank the staff at Milestone Memory Care Center in Hillsboro for the excellent attention they showed to Fred over the past 10 months. Alzheimer’s is a horrid disease and they made him feel like he was home and loved. A memorial celebration of Fred’s life will be held in Ladysmith on May 4th (opening fishing season!) at Faith United Methodist Church in Ladysmith with visitation at 10 and service at 11.
