Edward C. Hirchert, 93, of Platteville died on Monday, January 14, 2013 at his home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. Rev. Faustino Ruiz will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. Chapel Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where there will be a parish rosary at 3:45 p.m.; friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the church. Memorial may be made to the Edward C. Hirchert Memorial Fund. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family.

Ed was born on August 22, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William and Anna (Vysa) Hirchert. He was united in marriage to Frances Marie Young on September 14, 1940 in Chicago. Ed served in the United States Army during WW II where he received the Bronze Star. He worked for many years for the Arthur A. Craft Company in Chicago where he designed and engineered diamond industrial tools. After retiring Ed and Frances moved to Dickeyville, Wisconsin, and owned and operated the Plaza Motel for five years before moving to Platteville. Ed was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville, American Legion Post #42, VFW Post #5274, Platteville and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). He enjoyed working with his hands and creating his own personal pieces of art for his family. He liked to hunt, fish and spending time at his cabin in Minong, Wisconsin. In May 2012 Ed took part in the Honor Flight Program.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Frances of Platteville; six children, Nancy Minser of Lombard, IL; Bill (Rose) Hirchert of Littleton, CO; Connie (Bill) Stadelmann of St. Charles, IL; Eddie Hirchert, Jr. of Lake In The Hills, IL; Mary Lou (Jim) Wydeen of Caledonia, WI; Dan (Lisa) Hirchert of Waterloo, WI; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Mildred Hoffman of West Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Jeffrey, and brother, Richard.
