E. Dean Unbehaun

Dean Unbehaun, age 85 of Richland Center and Zephyrhills, Florida, died suddenly after a brief illness at a hospital in Zephyrhills, Florida, a city where he loved to be. Dean was born on August 26, 1927, in Richland Center to Edgar and Eva Lou (Perkins) Unbehaun. He attended the Lone Rock High School and later graduated from the Richland Center High School in 1946. Dean grew up on the farm and continued to farm throughout most of his life. He also worked at the Carnation Company, was a business partner in the local Massey Ferguson Implement business, worked at the Double Cola Company, was the manager of the oil/gas department for Krouskop's for 30 years and later retired from the Broadbendt Oil. On Thanksgiving evening he married his high school sweetheart Betty Rux Doudna on November 28, 1946. After their retirement, they started to spend their winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, starting in 1992. Dean first visited Zephyrhills when he was 11 years old, visiting his grandparents, who started going to Zephyrhills in 1927. Dean & Betty were the third generation in the family to winter in Zephyrhills and their son Rick & wife Janis are the fourth generation to do so. Dean & Betty enjoyed traveling throughout the country and enjoyed many cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska with family and friends. They also enjoyed many summers with their 5th wheel camper at Christmas Mountain at Wisconsin Dells. He enjoyed many carpentary projects for many people and he and his wife had a booth at the holiday craft fair in Richland Center for many years.

Survivors include his wife Betty and one son Rick & Janis Unbehaun all of Richland Center and Zephyrhills, Florida, brother-in-law Ken Klousia of Richland Center and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Eileen Klousia and Donna Arnett.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am at the Pratt Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Rev. Craig Peach will officiate with burial in the Richland Center Cemetery. Friends may call at the Pratt Memorial Chapel on Tuesday from 3-7pm or on Wednesday from 9:00 am until the time of the service.

  • PHOTOS: Madison store helps collect hundreds of Teddy bears for police

    MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

    Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

    "This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

    Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
