Charles P. Costello, age 81, of Janesville, died unexpectedly with his loving wife by his side on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison.

He was born in Janesville on Dec. 9, 1931, the son of Charles and Anna (DePaula) Costello. He graduated from Janesville High School and attended Milton College. He served in the US Army from Oct. 16, 1953, to Nov. 2, 1955. Charlie married Arlene N. Douglas on Feb. 4, 1961, at St. Angela Church, in Chicago. He was employed by General Motors for 36 years in management before retiring in 1993.

He was an active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church where in the 1970's he served as athletic director and fall festival coordinator. He was also very active for 7 years as concession manager for the Rock County 4-H fair. Charlie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and was there for anyone in need. Charlie enjoyed gardening and attending any local fair he could find.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; children: Cheryl (Jim Lilburn) Hahn of Janesville, Charles A. Costello of Machesney Park, IL; Steven (Melissa) Costello of Shawnee, KS, Michael (Michele) Costello, Kristin Matthew) Hoium, Carrie (Daniel) Craddick and Patti John) Brockhaus all of Janesville; and 20 grandchildren: Rachel, Sarah, and Kevin Hahn, Emily and Ryan Costello, Jarrett and Jacob Costello, Lexi and Carter Hoium, Avery and Curran Craddick, Ian and Lola Brockhaus, Charles, Michael and Vanessa Voight, Joshua and Jason Brunette, Denise Hahn and Dana McCord. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 sisters, Josephine Costello and Beatrice Mitchell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH with Fr. Randy Timmerman, Fr. John Auby, Fr. James Kuhn and Fr. Cyril Weisensel officiating. A visitation will take place on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of Mass at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH. SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY is assisting the family.
