Betty Jane (Nee Bemis / Zeller) Whitefield

Published On: Feb 19 2013 05:23:12 AM CST

SUN PRAIRIE – Betty, age 91, passed away at home on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, with her loving husband by her side. Betty was born in Waukesha, on Dec. 22, 1921, to Julius and Marjorie (Jacobson) Bemis. She grew up in Waukesha and became a loving wife and mother of four daughters, Bonnie Jean, Judith Ann, Jacqueline Lee, and Debra Lynn, by her then husband, Calvin Zeller.

Though her “plate was full,” Betty was an amazing homemaker, mother, and spouse, who always welcomed any family or friends who may have needed a place to stay or just a listening ear, over a cup of coffee. Betty was very creative, as well as providing good home- cooked meals for her family, managing household duties, staying active in her daughters’ extra activities at school by sewing a costume, or baking some cookies, etc. – all while caring for her disabled husband, Cal, in her middle years, until she was no longer able to be his caregiver.

She later married Jack (Bernard) Whitefield, originally from England, and then became a stepmother to Jack’s children, Bob (Christine), Marie (Keith) Weber, Joanne (Dennis) Nemeth, and Terry (Jan). She and Jack provided a welcoming home for family and friends to come and celebrate birthdays, picnics, holidays…and, if someone just needed “ to talk”…that was the time to “put the kettle on” (as Jack would say) for tea and conversation!

Betty, a very committed Christian woman, was a very active member of Hope Lutheran Church, along with her husband, Jack, for as long as she was able.

She is survived by her husband, Jack, along with his children and grandchildren; her daughters, Bonnie (Florian) Remitz, Judy Zeller, and Deb (Dave Kasten) Zeller. She is also survived by her grandchildren; great- grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jaqueline Lee; a granddaughter, Laura; a son-in-law ,Florian; and other relatives.

A Memorial Service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, with the Rev. Chris Lee-Thompson presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from Noon until the time of service on Wednesday.
