Wis. Dem chair says Burke would lead gov primary

MADISON, Wis. -

A top Wisconsin Democrat says former Trek executive Mary Burke would be the front-runner in a gubernatorial primary.

Burke, Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris and state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout all are mulling getting into the race next year against Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said Wednesday that he believes Burke would be the "instant front-runner" for the party's nomination and could clear the field.

Tate's remarks come after Harris said he plans to decide whether to run by Labor Day. Vinehout says she won't decide until next year.

Tate noted a primary in last year's recall push against Walker left the survivor, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, weakened. Walker easily defeated Barrett.

Harris said he's still wrestling with his decision and he's fine with Tate's remarks.
