Winter schools retire American Indian logo

Published On: May 22 2013 09:12:51 AM CDT

A western Wisconsin school district will change its Native American logo that it's used for its sports teams.

Winter School District Administrator Penny Boileau says the American Indian warrior logo has been used for decades, but if it's offensive to anyone, then it's time to change.

A state law requires the state superintendent to consider any complaints that a school mascot or nickname is race-based and discriminatory and decide whether to order the school to drop the moniker. The Winter School Board decided last month to proactively replace the logo.

Winter schools are using letter `W' as a placeholder until a new logo is implemented. WEAU-TV reported several hundred people voting for a logo recently selected an eagle with a feather as the new mascot.
