MADISON, Wis. -

A pedestrian was nearly hit by a van that slammed into a utility pole in downtown Madison Saturday night, according to police.

Officers said the out-of-control van came within several feet of hitting the 22-year-old woman before hitting the pole in the 100 block of Gorham Street after 11 p.m.

A witness said the collision caused sparks to fly from the utility pole. The woman was not injured.

The woman told police the driver and several passengers fled on foot. Police said they made contact with the driver a few hours later. Saul E. Ramirez, 19, of Madison, told police he took off because he was “way too messed up from drinking.”

Police said empty beer cans were found inside the smashed van.

Ramirez was cited on suspicion of hit-and-run, violating the absolute sobriety law and operating a vehicle without insurance.
